SARTELL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team competed in Saturday action at STA-Fit as they met up with nonconference opponent, Saint John's University. In what marked just the Eagle's second showing of the season, the UNW team faced a tough SJU squad, who were picked to finish 4th in the highly competitive MIAC preseason poll.
The Eagles recorded just one win on the day, coming from freshman
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) at the no. 6 singles spot. Ryerse defeated Jarod Swoboda 6-4, 6-4.
Northwestern put together some strong efforts in no. 1 and 2. doubles, as the duo of
Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) and
Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) won four games off SJU's no. 1 doubles team.
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) and
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) lost in an 8-3 battle.
The Eagles will have another chance to take on a non-conference opponent when they meet up with Buena Vista University on Saturday, Feb. 15. Action will get underway in Owatonna, Minn. at West Hills at 10 a.m.
