OWATONNA, MINN. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team matched-up with another non-conference opponent Saturday morning when they took on Buena Vista University at West Hills Tennis Center. The Eagles secured their first win of the spring after taking two of three doubles matches and five of six singles match-ups to win 7-2.
Northwestern's no. 2 doubles team made up of
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) and
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) rolled past BVU's Aaron Mumm and Brendan Schlader in 8-2 fashion. The Eagles no. 2 duo of
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian)e and
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) cruised to an 8-1 win to put UNW up a match heading into singles action.
In a hard fought match at the top of the lineup,
Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) pulled out a third-set super tiebreaker win over the Beaver's top competitor. Northwestern would fall in a close match at the no. 2 spot, before sweeping the 3 through 6 matches.
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) (no. 3 singles),
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) (no. 4),
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian)e (no. 5) and
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) (no. 6) each recorded straight set wins, dropping a combined nine games only.
The Eagles will play another match at 4 p.m. against North Central University in Fridley at Lifetime Fitness.
