FRIDLEY, MINN. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team took on Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opponent, North Central, in Saturday afternoon action. After defeating Buena Vista in morning play, the Eagles picked up their second win of the day in dominant fashion against the Rams, recording a 9-0 sweep.
Northwestern set the tone early, securing three quick wins in doubles play. The no. 1 duo of
Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) won 8-1 and the no. 3 team of
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian)e and
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) cruised to an 8-0 victory.
Singles play continued to go smoothly for UNW, as all six Eagles won in straight sets, dropping a combined four games as a team.
Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) won in a perfect 6-0, 6-0 match at no. 2 and
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) did the same at the no 4. spot.
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 29 when they take on the University of Dubuque at Lifetime Fitness in White Bear Lake. Match play is set to begin at 3 p.m.
