Eagles Clinch Share of UMAC Title with 70-64 Win at UW-Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Northwestern  men's basketball team hit the road to take on UW-Superior in Wednesday night conference action. The Eagles outscored the Yellowjackets 43-30 in second half play and made six straight free throws down the stretch to secure a 70-64 win, their 12th straight.
 
With the win, the Eagles clinch at least a share of the UMAC regular season title, handing Superior just their second conference loss of the year. The win also gives UNW the no. 1 seed in next week's UMAC Tournament. Northwestern improves to 18-6 overall and 14-1 in the UMAC, while the Yellowjackets fall to 16-8 overall, 13-2 in conference play.
 
UW-Superior took the lead early in first half play and held on to it to lead 34-27 at the break. The Eagles shot just 29% from the field and missed six free throw attempts in the opening half to give the Yellowjackets an edge.
 
Second half action quickly changed pace as Northwestern tied it up at the 16:10 mark on a layup by Tanner Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area). In a back-and-forth battle, the game was all tied up at 59 apiece with 2:42 on the clock.
 
Michael Moore (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) drained a big time three-pointer to give the Eagles the permanent lead and Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) followed with a layup in the paint. UNW knocked down all six free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
 
Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) led Northwestern with 18 points on the night, making seven of seven shots from the charity stripe. Tanner Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area) added 16 points, 12 rebounds – his 13th double-double of the season. Solomon Bach (Watertown, S.D./Watertown) finished with 12 points, 10 boards. Michael Moore (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) and Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) eached dished out four assists in the win.
 
Northwestern outrebounded UW-Superior, 43-29 and scored 19 second chance points to Superior's seven.
