ST. BONIFACIOUS, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team traveled to fellow Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opponent, Crown College, for a Wednesday night match-up. Catching their stride soon after tip-off, the Eagles soared to another victory in high scoring fashion, while holding Crown to less than 10 points for half of the game.
Northwestern wins its third straight conference game to move to 8-2 in the UMAC and 12-7 overall, while Crown falls to 1-9 in the UMAC and 4-14 this season.
Although the Storm scored the first points of the game, it wasn't long before the Eagles got on the board. First quarter play would be the only time Crown led as Northwestern continued to build their lead.
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) scored key baskets in the second quarter, along with two
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) three pointers to put the Eagles up 33-19 going into the half. A strong UNW defense resulted in the Storm scoring a mere two lay-ups all quarter.
Third quarter play started even stronger than the first half for the Eagles as they scored almost 30 points to the Storm's 11.
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) got hot, connecting on four three pointers, which added to the wide range of fast break points and layups by a number of Eagles.
Heading into the fourth, Northwestern held a dominant 30-point lead. As UNW continued to stay in rhythm, they scored nine straight points to stay ahead of the Storm. The Eagles continued to give immense pressure and held Crown to six points.
Altogether, Northwestern came away with 18 steals, scoring 20 points off of turnovers. The Eagles had 14 second chance points to the Storm's four.
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) led the Eagles with 20 points, while
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) and
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) each added 14.
UNW finished the game well, defeating the Storm for the second time this season with a score of 74-36.
Northwestern is back in action this Saturday, Feb. 1 as they host the North Central Rams in the Ericksen Center. Tip-off is set for 4:45 pm, following the men's game, which begins at 3 pm.
