ST. PAUL, MINN. – Northwestern men's soccer hosted the Saint John's Johnnies of the Midwest Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in a Saturday evening bout. The Johnnies were an undefeated 2-0 on the season coming into the matchup, and they remain undefeated after grounding the Eagles by a score of 5-2. With the loss, UNW drops to 0-4 on the season.
The beginning of the game was an electric start between the two teams. Saint John's got the scoring going, netting a goal just over two minutes into the match. Northwestern junior
Joshua Hintz (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View) was able to answer back within the same minute off of a twenty-five yard right-footed strike. The remainder of the half would remain scoreless the remainder of the half, until the Johnnies were able to sneak in another goal with just under two-minutes remaining in the period.
Saint John's started the second half like they finished the first, scoring a goal in the 47
th minute to take the 3-1 lead. The Eagles would answer back again with a goal from
Taylor Modaff (Monticello, Minn./Monticello), assisted by Hintz to pull back within one. Northwestern would continue to put on pressure on the Johnny defense, but SJU would score two more goals to lock up the victory. Making his first career start in net was senior
Joe Welch (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount), who was able to notch five saves on the contest.
