ST. PETER, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team traveled to Gustavus Adolphus Monday afternoon to play another tough MIAC opponent. Humidity levels were high and a factor for both teams.
The Eagles came ready to get down to business at the beginning of play. With the first whistle, the Gusties came charging towards Northwestern's defense with little to no let-up. In the ninth minute, Gustavus had their first of two scores, splitting the defensive line.
Northwestern moved forward and kept the momentum up. The Gusties were still able to score their second goal off a slotted ball through the middle to make the score 2-0.
The Eagles riffled back with a score in the forty-first minute as junior captain
Taylor Brinkman (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) won a ball to send junior
Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) running down the left sideline. She was able to find the back of the night, sliding the ball past Gustavus' goalie.
With the momentum switching their way, Northwestern went into halftime hopeful for a comeback. Although the Eagles brought the heat and put the Gusties back on their heels, they were not able to tie the game.
The match ended in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss for the Eagles. Effort and intensity was through the roof for the Eagles on the grass surface in Monday's contest. Freshman goalie
Ellie Fryer (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) had 8 saves on the night, helping the Eagles to stay in the game till the final whistle.
The lady Eagles will be back in action this Wednesday, playing at Hamline at 4 pm. To follow along and see all things Northwestern women's soccer go to unweagles.com.
