ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern football team will welcome Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to Reynolds Field for the program's 2019 home opener on Saturday, Sept. 14. Kickoff is scheduled for noon against the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) reigning champion. Both teams enter the match-up after falling in their season openers, setting the stage for an all out battle to record the first win of the year.
A year ago, the Eagles traveled to Claremont, Calif. for the program's first ever meeting with CMS. UNW fell in a 14-3 loss in the 90-degree west coast heat. Northwestern's offense was stifled by the 2018 SCIAC champion, but
Noah Nightingale (Fennville, Mich./Fennville) and
Chase Marlenee (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) played well defensively, recording 10 stops apiece.
Last week, the Eagles opened the 2019 season against a dominant Central College team. Despite suffering a 42-12 loss, Northwestern showed signs of good things to come. Sophomore QB1,
Damon Clapper (Dallas Center, Iowa/Dallas Center - Grimes), put an end to the Dutchmen's first half run – leading the charge on an eight play, 75-yard drive. After completing a game-best 43-yard pass to
KJ Downey (Blaine, Minn./Blaine), Clapper ran it in himself for a five-yard TD rush to lessen the deficit to 14 (21-7) with under 3 minutes to play in the first half.
It's no secret that the Eagles play well on their home turf. Since the completion of renovations at Reynolds Field in 2014, the Eagles have compiled an impressive 19-6 tally on their home turf. In those 25 home contests, UNW has outscored its opponents 595-369.
Get comfortable, UNW Eagle football fans. Northwestern will be back at Reynolds Field the next two Saturdays as they open UMAC play by hosting Greenville University on Sept. 21 at noon and Crown College on Sept. 28 at 7 PM. The Greenville game marks Northwestern's 2019 Homecoming celebration. This Saturday's contest against CMS will be a purple out. Fans, be sure to wear purple to support your Eagles!
