ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern volleyball team wrapped up action at the Kathryne Pals Legacy Invitational Saturday afternoon with a four-set win over Coe College. The Eagles closed out opening weekend of competition with a 2-1 record in tournament play after securing the 25-23, 17-25, 27-25 and 25-18 victory over the Kohawks.
Saturday's meeting marked just the sixth time Northwestern has faced Coe College in program history and the Eagles' third straight win over the American Rivers Conference foe.
Northwestern cruised to a first set win, propelled by four kills from
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian). Coe capitalized on consistent offense in set two, hitting a .348 average to down the Eagles by an eight point spread.
UNW didn't back down, the purple and gold fought hard to secure a 27-25 set three win and carried the momentum into a dominant set four.
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) put together a team-best 15 kills in the match and added 16 digs – her third double-double this season. Schwitters was named to the Kathryne Pals All-Tournament Team – voted by participating coaches. The junior outside hitter recorded 37 kills, 47 digs and four aces in weekend action.
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian) put together another strong game, tacking on 12 kills from the outside. Freshman
Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) dug up 25 balls from the libero position – a season best.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) dished out 28 assists;
Hope Kapelke (Fort Atkinson, Wisc./Fort Atkinson) added 13.
The Eagles are thrilled to have 56 generous individuals participating in this season's Aces for Joy campaign. The initiative, aimed at raising funds for the Pals Family Foundation, features a $1 pledge from campaign participants for every Northwestern ace this season. The Eagles secured 21 aces in weekend tournament action – bringing the total donation amount this season up to $1,176!
Northwestern will travel to St. Joseph Minnesota for a trimatch against Concordia and St. Ben's on Sept. 7. The Eagles will open conference play on Sept. 10 when they welcome Crown College to the Ericksen Center for a 7 p.m. slate.
