Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Late Push Not Enough for Women’s Lacrosse

MEQUON, WIS. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse started their Wisconsin weekend road trip taking on the Falcons of Concordia University Wisconsin. The first-ever meeting between the two Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) squads was a thriller. The Falcons (5-5, 5-1 MWLC) were able to hold off the Eagles late push, winning by a final score of 13-12. With the loss, UNW moves to an even 4-4 overall, and drops to 3-4 in MWLC contests.

Annie Ellis (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) got the Eagles going in the first half, scoring at the 21 minute mark to even the game at 1-1. Senior Hannah Shands (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi) would add another goal for the Eagles shortly after, to give UNW the 2-1 lead. The Falcons would hold command for the rest of the half, as they took a 7-4 lead into the break.

Concordia started the second half, with a goal less than a minute into the period. Northwestern would answer with three of their own to pull back within one. The two teams traded blows for the remainder of the game, and the Falcons came out on top. The Eagles were able to keep nudging within one goal, but the CUW defense held strong.

Shands led the UNW offense yet again, netting four goals in the contest. Fellow senior Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) added a trio of goals to go along with a single assist. Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) and Ellis each ended the game with two goals, respectively. In net, Sydney Werlein (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) tallied 11 saves in the loss.

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. to take on Marian University. For all things Northwestern lacrosse, fans can visit www.unweagles.com.
