Women’s Lacrosse Slays the Knights on Senior Night

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team hosted the Wartburg College Knights in a Thursday evening Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) contest. It was senior night for UNW as they honored Logan Retzlaff (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter), Kayla Gryniewski (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna), Hannah Shands (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi), Annie Ellis (Farmington, Minn./Farmington), Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow High School), Maggie DeVore (Prior Lake, Minn./Lakeville North), Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi), and Sydney Werlein (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North). The Eagles looked to even the all-time series at 2-2 after downing Wartburg last season, and they did just that. Northwestern wins by a final score of 15-12, and improves to 7-6 overall and 6-6 in MWLC contests.

The first half a game of runs. The Knights jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Northwestern would answer back with three goals of their own to tie up the game. Wartburg pulled away late in the period, but UNW would end the first half on a three goal run to pull within one.

The Eagles found their groove in the second half, outscoring the Knights 5-1 midway through the frame. Wartburg would make a late push to end the game, but it was not enough to overcome the UNW offense.

Shands led the Eagle offense with four goals on seven shots. Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) added a trio of goals and an assist, while Ellis also tallied three goals. Samantha Wiebold (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) and Broberg hopped in on the scoring action as well, each scoring two goals. Retzlaff rounded out the scoring with a goal and an assist, respectively. In net, Werlein totaled four saves in the win.

Northwestern will be on the road this Saturday, April 27, traveling to Monmouth College. For all things Eagle lacrosse, fans can visit www.unweagles.com.
