Men's Tennis Wins Sixth Straight, Downing Bethany Lutheran 9-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The University of Northwestern men's tennis team welcomed Bethany Lutheran to St. Paul for an evening of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action. The match, which originally began Wednesday, was completed this evening due to a prolonged rain delay. The Eagles swept BLC to improve to 13-7 overall and 5-0 in league play.

Northwestern took all three doubles matches, highlighted by the no. 2 and 3 teams who won in quick 8-1 and 8-0 fashion. The Eagles continued to dominate in singles play as Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield Senior) dropped just a single game at no. 5 singles, winning (6-0, 6-1). Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) at no. 6 singles and Landon Ridpath (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech), playing no. 1, also recorded dominant wins. Velgersdyk posted a (6-2, 6-0) win, while Ridpath took his match (6-2, 6-1).

Austin Bricker (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grand) defeated his opponent to record his ninth straight singles win and Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) came from behind to secure an amazing third set tiebreak win. Pfaff fell 1-6 in the first set, but finished his match (which was started on Wednesday) to record a 6-3 second set win and sealed the deal with a 10-8 tiebreak.

Northwestern will return to action on Friday, April 26 when they travel to UW-Superior to take on the Yellowjackets. First serve is slated for 4 p.m. The Eagles, St. Scholastica and Superior are all undefeated in league play. Conference finishes will be determined during weekend play.
