Men's Tennis Cruises to 7-2 Win, Setting Up UMAC Championship Saturday at Scholastica

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team grabbed a road victory in Superior tonight, defeating the Yellowjackets 7-2. This is the team's seventh straight victory and moves the Eagles to a perfect 6-0 in UMAC play.

Northwestern's doubles teams got the team off to a successful start, taking two of the three matches. The no. 1 duo of Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Austin Bricker (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grand) picked up a tight 8-6 victory, while the two pairing of Landon Ridpath (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Rapid City Stevens) gave up just two games in their win. At the no. 3 spot, Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield Senior) and Colton Paskewitz (Browerville, Minn/Staples) fought hard but fell just short in an 8-6 defeat.

UNW singles players sustained the team's solid performance, taking five of the six matches played.  Pfaff outlasted his opponent at no. 2 in a war of attrition (6-1, 4-6, 11-9), while Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) also picked up a well-earned three set victory (7-6, 2-6, 11-9) at the six position.

The Eagles will return to the courts tomorrow for the regular season finale in Duluth against the St. Scholastica Saints, with the UMAC regular season championship on the line.  Fans can head to unweagles.com to stay up to date with UNW Men's Tennis.
