ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team hosted the Beloit College Buccaneers in a Saturday afternoon contest. The all-time series was tied up 1-1 between the two programs before this afternoons contest, and the Eagles looked to avenge last night's loss to Illinois Tech. Northwestern was able to bounce back, picking up the 12-9 win over the Buccaneers. With the win, UNW improves to 6-6 overall and 5-6 in Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) contests.
The Eagles struck first less than a minute into the game, and stayed in charge the rest of the half. Beloit was able to four goals of their own, but
Annie Ellis' (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) four first half goals helped the Eagles to a 7-4 halftime lead.
The Buccaneers turned their offense up a notch in the second half, as they scored two quick goals to start the half. Northwestern stood firm, however, as they were able to answer back from each Beloit push. Both teams would put up five goals in the closing frame, as the Eagles hold off the Buccaneers.
Ellis tied her career-high with five goals on the contest to lead the UNW offense.
Hannah Shands (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi) scored two goals to go along with an assist, while
Samantha Wiebold (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) also added two goals, respectively. In net,
Sydney Werlein (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) tallied seven saves on the win.
Northwestern will be back in action Thursday, April 25, as they host Wartburg University. For all things Eagle lacrosse, fans can follow along at www.unweagles.com.
