ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team hosted the Scarlet Hawks of Illinois Tech in a Friday evening matchup. This is the first-ever meeting between the two Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) programs. Prior to tonight's contest, Illinois Tech was resting third place in the conference standings, while UNW was sitting at eighth place in MWLC games. The Scarlet Hawks were able to take the game by a final score of 9-5. With the loss, Northwestern falls to 5-6 overall, and 4-6 in conference matches.
Northwestern came out strong to open the game, jumping out to an early 3-1 lead. Illinois Tech was able to tie it up at three midway through the first. The Eagles were able to net two unanswered goals before halftime, and would carry the 5-3 advantage into the second half.
The UNW offense hit a snag in the second half, and the Scarlet Hawks took advantage of it. Northwestern was unable to net a goal in the second frame, and Illinois Tech would find their groove as they would go on to score six goals to end the game.
Annie Ellis' (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) two first half goals led the Eagle offense.
Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi),
Hannah Shands (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi), and
Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) each added a goal, respectively. In net,
Sydney Werlein (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) tallied 10 saves in the contest.
