INDIANOLA, IOWA – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team wrapped up competition in Iowa on Saturday after defeating both Elmhust and Simpson College. The Eagles return home from weekend play having gone 3-0 to improve to 10-7 overall.
Northwestern 8, Elmhurst 1
The Eagles kicked off match play with three wins in doubles action. With just a five-player roster, UNW recorded default wins at the no. 3 doubles and no. 6 singles spots.
Landon Ridpath (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) recorded a straight sets win at no. 1 singles and
Austin Bricker (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grand) came out on top in a tight second set, winning (6-1, 7-6) with a 7-4 tiebreak.
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Rapid City Stevens) won handily (6-4, 6-2) at no. 4 singles.
Elmhurst moves to 4-7 on the year.
Northwestern 7, Simpson 2
The Eagles swept doubles competition, dropping just eight total games to take an early 3-0 lead.
Landon Ridpath (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) posted a dominant (6-2, 6-0) win at the no. 1 spot, while
Austin Bricker (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grand) picked up his sixth straight singles win, dropping just two games to his opponent at no. 3 singles (6-1, 6-1).
The Eagles also recorded wins at no. 5 and 6 singles as
Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield Senior) won in a third set tiebreaker and
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) recorded a close 7-5 set one win, before cruising to a 6-1 second set.
Northwestern will return to action on Monday, April 22 when they welcome North Central to St. Paul for Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play. First serve is slated for 12 p.m.
