STORM LAKE, Iowa – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team hit the road for a weekend of tennis action in Iowa. In Friday evening play, the Eagles downed Buena Vista, 7-2. The win marked Head Coach
Matt Swigart's 200th career combined win.
Swigart took over the Northwestern men's program in 2013 and became UNW's all-time wins leader following the Eagles 9-0 win over Martin Luther on April 5, 2019.
Swigart also took over the women's program in 2013 where he has tacked on an impressive 120 wins through seven seasons. Collectively, he has effectively coached 51 UMAC All-Conference players, six UMAC Players of the Year and has earned four Coach of the Year nods. He led the UNW women to UMAC Championships in 2014 and 2015 and most recently led the men's squad to a 2018 UMAC tournament championship, earning a berth to the NCAA tournament.
The Eagles started today's match-up by winning all three doubles contests.
Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Austin Bricker (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grand) pulled off a tight 8-7 (14-12) tiebreak win at the no. 1 spot.
Northwestern took four of six matches in singles play as
Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove),
Austin Bricker (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grand),
Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield Senior) and
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) all pulled off straight set wins. Bricker has won four straight matches in singles action.
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Rapid City Stevens) and
Landon Ridpath (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) fell in third set tiebreakers.
The Eagles will return to play tomorrow when they take on Elmhurst College in Indianola, Iowa. First serve is slated for 1:30 p.m.
