MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team fell to Wartburg College and Hamline University Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University Minnesota campus. The losses move the Eagles to 5-6 in non-conference play.
Match 1: Wartburg College 6, Northwestern 3
Northwestern kicked off action on the right foot, securing of three doubles matches to take the lead heading into singles play. The first pairing of Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Austin Bricker (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grand) picked up an 8-5 win, while the no. 3 pairing of Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield Senior) and Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) prevailed for an 8-7 win.
UNW fought hard in singles action, before falling in five of the six played. Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Rapid City Stevens) was the lone victor, picking up q hard-earned victory (2-6, 7-5, 12-10) at no. 4. At the one and six spots, Landon Ridpath (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and Velgersdyk came up just shy, falling in third set tiebreakers, handing the overall 6-3 win to the Knights.
Match 2: Hamline University 8, Northwestern 1
UNW got on the board early in doubles play in the Eagle's matchup with the Pipers, taking one of the three possible points. The second pairing of Ridpath and Studer came out on top in a tight 8-6 victory.
Northwestern fell short across the board in all singles matches. Bricker (at the three position) kept it close by securing seven games in his match, while at the five spot Wedin took his opponent the distance (6-3, 4-6, 7-10) before coming up short.
