MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team took on the Auggies of Augsburg University (2-2, 2-0 MWLC) in a Saturday evening matchup. This is the third meeting all-time between the two squads, with Augsburg leading the series 3-0 after defeating the Eagles 17-4 last season. Augsburg was able to top the Eagles again, winning by a final score of 12-9 to move the Eagles 2-1 overall and 1-1 in Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) play.
Augsburg was selected by fellow MWLC coaches to finish second in the conference in preseason rankings, and came into the contest coming off their first win over Marian University on Monday of this week. The Auggies started out with an early 2-0 lead in the first half, but the Eagles answered back with a pair of goals to even the score at 2-2. Both teams traded goals to end the first, and the score was tied at 4-4 at the half.
The Auggies scored a quick three goals in a three minute span to take the 8-6 lead. Again, Northwestern was able to answer back with three goals of their own to take the lead with 10 minutes left in the game. Augsburg's offense became too much to handle for the Eagles to handle, as they scored four unanswered goals to end the game.
Senior midfielder
Hannah Shands (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi) led the way offensively for Northwestern with four goals to go along with five ground balls. Junior
Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) added another three goals and two assists for the Eagles.
