ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team welcomed Concordia University Chicago to St. Paul for the 2019 home opener on the Reynolds Field turf. The match-up, which marked the Eagles second Midwest Lacrosse Conference contest, featured a competitive start before the Cougars took over in the second half to secure a 14-6 final win.
Northwestern falls to 2-2 overall, while Concordia improves to 4-2 on the year.
The Eagle offense got off to a strong start as Samantha Wiebold (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) scored back-to-back goals to go up 2-0 just two minutes into play. Concordia responded at the 27:15 mark to get on the board for the first time, but Northwestern took another two-goal lead when Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) scored unassisted.
Concordia tied it up for the first time at three apiece with 10 minutes remaining in the half and took their first lead shortly after.
Northwestern didn't back down, tying it up again at 5-5 following two more goals from Wiebold. The Cougars', Anna Kellar scored with under a minute remaining to give Concordia a 6-5 lead at the half.
The Eagles were plagued with an offensive drought in second half action, while Concordia tacked on eight unanswered goals. Wiebold put an end to the drought with 10 seconds remaining, scoring on an assist from Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi).
Weibold led Northwestern with five goals and two ground balls. Broberg added a goal and a ground ball, while Danielle Heiderscheid (Cambridge, Minn./Homeschool) picked up four ground balls.
Sydney Werlein (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) recorded eight saves in the loss at goalie. The senior has snagged 30 saves on the year.
Northwestern will return to action on Saturday, March 23 when they travel to Illinois to take on Aurora University. The MWLC match-up is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
