DULUTH, Minn .—The University of Northwestern women's basketball team hit the road for a Saturday afternoon match-up at St. Scholastica. The Eagles, who trailed the Saints through three and a half quarters of play, orchestrated a dynamic comeback down the stretch. Freshman
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) drove to the hoop off an inbound play, connecting on a layup and drawing the foul to give UNW a one-point edge with two seconds remaining. The Eagles 63-62 buzzer beater win secured an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference playoff berth.
The Eagles started slow, scoring just 10 points in the first quarter and 15 in the second to fall behind 38-25 at the half. Northwestern slowly changed the momentum, starting with a noble defensive effort in the third quarter that held Scholastica to just nine points and cut the deficit to eight.

Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) followed suit with a layup and
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) knocked down a three of her own to pull UNW within three.
In the final minutes, DeKam took over. As the Eagles trailed by five, the rookie guard scored two layups in the final three minutes (aided by a layup from
Miranda Crenshaw (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) and free throw from
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield)) to land the Eagles one point shy with five seconds on the clock.
After setting a cross screen at the baseline, DeKam flashed to the top of the key where she received the inbound pass, took one hard dribble to the hoop and drew contact while connecting on the game-winning layup. She scored all 12 of her points in the second half, to propel the Eagles to the crucial UMAC win.
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) led the Eagles on the day, scoring 18 points on 8 of 11 shooting. Landers pulled down a team-best 13 rebounds to record the double-double.
Senior
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) also recorded double-figure scoring, finishing with 11 points. Berglund pulled down eight rebounds, dished out five assists and grabbed three steals.
With the win, Northwestern improves to 11-12 overall, 8-6 in the UMAC. The Saints fall to 6-16, 5-9 in conference play this season.
Northwestern will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13 when they host Minnesota Morris at the Ericksen Center. The Cougars enter the match-up with a 15-8 record and an 11-3 mark in the UMAC.
