NEW ULM, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team traveled to Martin Luther College for Saturday afternoon UMAC action. The contest, which marked the teams' final regular season match-up, featured a dominant first quarter from the Eagles who recorded a 21-3 lead through 10 minutes of action. Three UNW players scored in double-figures to secure a 75-34 win over the Knights.
Northwestern held Martin Luther to just three points in the first quarter and zero points in the third to build a notable lead. The Eagles led by as much as 46 points midway through the fourth after freshman guard
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) connected on a layup.
Lund led UNW offensively, downing five shots from beyond the arc to finish with a team-high 19 points. The rookie guard is tied for first in the UMAC in three-point shooting with 63 makes on the year.
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) each added 16 points on the day. Berglund shot eight of 11 from the field and dished out five assists. Landers pulled down 13 rebounds to record her third double-double this season.
Northwestern played team-first ball, dishing out 30 assists collectively led by Lund with six. They outrebounded the Knights, 58-31 and held the opponent to just 20% shooting from the field.
With the win, Northwestern closes out the regular season with a 13-12 overall record and a 10-6 mark in the UMAC. Martin Luther end its season at 2-23, 2-14 in conference action.
Northwestern will host the quarterfinal round of the UMAC Playoffs on Monday, Feb. 18 at the Ericksen Center. The Eagles will welcome No. 5 seed, North Central to St. Paul for a 7 p.m. tipoff. View the complete tournament schedule
