ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team welcomed St. Scholastica to the Ericksen Center for Saturday afternoon UMAC action. The Eagles went on a 21-4 run to end first half play and never lost control of the game. UNW cruised to a 77-54 win, their fifth straight over the Saints.
Northwestern leads the all-time series with the Saints, 58-29 as they improve to 6-5 on the year, 3-1 in the UMAC. Scholastica falls to 3-7 (2-2) this season.
Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) got UNW off to a strong start, scoring six straight points.
Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) followed up with five of his own to give UNW an 11-4 edge. The Saints were forced to take a timeout when the Eagles extended the lead to 10 (16-6) just 14 minutes into action.
Scholastica put together a 14-3 run to take a 20-19 lead just five minutes later. Northwestern quickly took it back and soon led by a game-best 16 points propelled by three, three-pointers from
Brady Peterson (Princeton, Minn./Homeschool). The Eagles entered the half up 40-24, after shooting 44% from the field to the Saints' 30%.
Northwestern continued to control the game in second half play, jumping out to a 20+ point lead following Peterson's fifth make from beyond the arc. UNW rode out the second half lead to a 77-54 final victory. The Eagles dominated the boards, led by
Tanner Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area) with a career-best 20 (the third most in UNW single-game history). UNW won the team battle of the boards, 51-34. Scholastica suffered from just 1-28 shooting from three-point range.
Northwestern's well-balanced scoring efforts resulted in five players reaching double-digit point totals.
Brady Peterson (Princeton, Minn./Homeschool) led the Eagles with 18 after making six shots from long range.
Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) tacked on 15 points, seven boards and
Michael Moore (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) added 14 points and a team-best eight assists.
Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) and
Tanner Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area) each finished with 10 points apiece – Youngberg recording his fifth double-double this season.
Youngberg was honored for scoring his 1,000th career point prior to Saturday's contest. He joins just 26th others in program history to achieve this.
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 17 when they welcome Lawrence University to the Ericksen Center. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. (following women's action).
