MANKATO, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team hit the road for Wednesday night UMAC action. The Eagles faced a competitive BLC team, who were picked to finish first by league coaches in this year's preseason poll. UNW put together a strong showing, holding the Vikings scoreless in second quarter play to cruise to a 59-52 victory.
With their third straight win, the Eagles improve to 5-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in UMAC action. Bethany falls to 5-2 on the year, 1-1 in conference play. Tonight's win broke a three-game losing streak in all-time meetings with the tough BLC squad (the 2019 UMAC Tournament Champions).
Following a competitive first quarter, the Eagles trailed the Vikings 18-16. After a scoreless four minutes, UNW would officially take the lead on a three-pointer from
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley). BLC would go scoreless in the quarter as Northwestern entered the half up 26-18.
The Eagles would outscore the Vikings by five in third quarter play and despite a big offensive finale from the home team – UNW cruised to victory aided by nine points from Lund in the final 10 minutes.
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) put together another strong offensive night to lead Northwestern with 22 points. Lund tacked on 18 points and three assists for the Eagles, while
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) pulled down nine boards.
Northwestern will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 14 when they welcome St. Scholastica to the Ericksen Center. Tipoff is slated for 4:45 p.m. against the Saints.
