Emily Currie Leads Women's Soccer to Advance to the UMAC Championship

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team hosted the UMAC semifinal round on Wednesday evening against the UW-Superior Yellowjackets, for a chance to advance to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament Championship game. This was the second meeting between the Yellowjackets and the Eagles, as Northwestern was victorious once again, winning 2-0.

Northwestern got their first goal of the night in the eleventh minute as Senior Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Homeschool) capitalized on a penalty kick, which cruised passed the keeper in high fashion.

The Eagles kept control of the entire half, possessing the ball and taking lots of shots. In the twenty-eighth minute, Junior Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) connected with Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Homeschool) for another goal for the Eagles, Currie's sixth goal on the year.

At the end of the half, the Eagles had taken 12 shots on goal and 4 corners.

Second half, the Eagles came out strong and rested for more action. Again, the Eagles had momentum up field and took another 9 shots in the second half. Junior Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) led the Eagles with 6 shots, 3 of them on net. Senior Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) had 4 shots, 2 of which were on goal.

Freshman, goalie Ellie Fryer (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) had to make only 1 save all night as Northwestern's defense kept the ball away from their own net.

The Eagles will take their five game win streak into the championship game on Saturday, November 9, where they will travel to Duluth, MN to take on St. Scholastica at 1 p.m. For more information, fans can visit www.unweagles.com and follow women's soccer on Instagram and Twitter at @unwwsoc.
