ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team welcomed UW-River Falls to the Ericksen Center for a Tuesday evening non-conference tilt. Despite being all tied up at the half, the Falcons got to the line 13 times in second half action and capitalized on 21 second chance points to put together a 101-93 final win.
Northwestern falls to 3-4 on the year, while UW-River Falls improves to 4-1. The Falcons have recorded wins over St. Scholastica and UW-Superior this season. The match-up marked the end of UNW's non-conference stretch, with UMAC play slated to begin next week.
Tonight's game showcased a competitive first half with three tied scores and three lead changes. The Falcons put together a five point lead with six minutes remaining. They extended it to a game-best nine points before
Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) knocked down a long ball to pull the Eagles back within six (44-38).
Tanner Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area) got to the paint to make it a three-point game with under a minute to play. The senior forward ran down the clock and pulled up for a buzzer-beater jumper to tie it up at the half, 48-48. Youngberg entered the half with a team-best 15 points. Bach added 10 points in first half play.
The Falcons pulled ahead to start the second, and went up by nine following a three from Matt Keller (70-61). The battle of the long ball continued when UNW responded with back-to-back threes from
Jaron Zwagerman (Sioux Falls, S.D./O'Gorman) and
Michael Moore (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) to bring the Eagles within three (73-70).
River Falls would put together a 7-0 run to take the first double digit lead of the night. A scoreless three minutes by Northwestern would end up being costly. Despite seven straight points from
Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake), the Falcons would maintain the late lead to cruise to victory.
Alm led the Eagles in scoring with 22 points on the night, shooting four of six from three. The junior guard added six rebounds and four assists.
Tanner Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area) tacked on 21 points and a team-best 11 boards and five assists.
Michael Moore (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) finished with 20 points, while
Solomon Bach (Watertown, S.D./Watertown) added 12 on the night.
Northwestern will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 4 when they kick off Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play by welcoming Crown College to the Ericksen Center. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. with the women's game to follow.
