ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's hoops team welcomed Gustavus Adolphus to the Ericksen Center for a Saturday afternoon non-conference tilt. After falling by one point in the season opener, the Eagles rolled to their third straight win – downing the Gusties 83-71 in final scoring. UNW shot 52% from the field and committed just seven turnovers to record their second straight win over a MIAC opponent.
The Eagles improve to 3-1 on the year, while Gustavus falls to 0-2 overall.
Northwestern wasted no time getting its offense going, jumping out to a 16-4 start. The Eagles continued to outplay the Gusties—holding them to under 10 points through nearly the first 12 minutes of action. In the following four minutes, GAC put together a 14-0 run to pull within two points (26-24).
The Eagles finished the half outscoring Gustavus 11-4 to lead by nine (37-28).
Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) led UNW offensively with 12 points. Alm went six of nine from the field with two steals in the first 20 minutes.
Gustavus pulled within one point early in second half action, but Northwestern went on a run of their own, sparked by a
Michael Moore (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) steal and dunk from
Owen Boerema (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) and a quick layup from Moore to give Northwestern a 14 point lead (73-59). Tough defense from the Eagles and six straight made free throws by UNW allowed them to hold on to the late lead.
A trio of Northwestern players led the way offensively with 19 points apiece including
Michael Moore (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg),
Tanner Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area) and
Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake).
Michael Moore (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) recorded a double-double, after also dishing out a career-best 11 assists.
Solomon Bach (Watertown, S.D./Watertown) added 11 points on the night, while
Owen Boerema (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) pulled down a team-best six boards.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 20 when they travel down Snelling to Hamline University. Tipoff against the Pipers is slated for 7:30 p.m.
