ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team came together for their second conference game at Reynolds field this Wednesday night. The weather was delightful as the sun was shining and the wind was slightly blowing. The Eagles competed against Minnesota Morris and came away with their first conference win with a score of 3-1.
The first half, the Eagles worked well together but weren't able to capitalize. With twelve shots, the Eagles had most of the momentum up field. The Lady Eagles came away with six corner kicks first half to Morris' one.
First half ended with an even 0-0 score.
Second half, the Eagles came back with grit, scoring three goals to the Cougars one. Senior,
Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) sent a ball into the box as
Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) was able to finish and capitalize on the play. Ten minutes later, Morris scored to tie the game 1-1.
Responding to the Cougars goal, Northwestern came back strong. In the sixty-third minute,
Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) scored her second goal of the night off an assist from
Alexis Albrecht (Fargo, N.D./Sheyenne). Seventeen minutes later,
Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) scored the last goal of the game on an assist from
RJ Mullin (Temecula, Calif./Rancho Christian).
The Eagles finished the game with twenty-eight shots, fifteen on goal. Goalkeeper,
Ellie Fryer (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) had four saves on the night, as Morris had few chances to score due to Northwestern's defense.The defensive backs played strong, keeping the Cougars on their own half.
Northwestern moves to 4-9 on the season and 1-1 in the UMAC. Minnesota Morris falls to 2-6 and 0-3 in the UMAC.
