MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The University of Northwestern women's soccer team traveled southward, into the city, to play the North Central Rams. Winter storms brought snow, sleet and cold temperatures as elements in the Saturday afternoon contest. The Eagles had high expectations coming into the game and finished strong. Northwestern beat North Central 9-1 to get their second UMAC win.
Junior,
Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) scored the first goal for the Eagles off an assist from defender,
Alexis Albrecht (Fargo, N.D./Sheyenne). Three minutes later, the Rams were able to sneak their lone goal in against the Eagles. Northwestern would come back to score four more in the first half,
Danielle Roberts (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) and
Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Homeschool) both scored unassisted. Freshman,
Riley Bauer (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) scored as
Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) assisted her. With thirty seconds left in the half, sophomore, defender
Natalie Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan County Christian) scored her first goal on the season on a far shot from midfield range that found its way to the back of the net, out of the goalies reach.
The Eagles finished the half with 24 shots and 7 corner kicks.
The Lady Eagles moved the ball well and kept possession during the half.
Second half started well after the women had a few moments out of the wind and rain.
Emily Daubenmier (Kijabe, KE./Rift Valley Academy) scored off of another assist from
Alexis Albrecht (Fargo, N.D./Sheyenne). Senior, Captain,
Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Homeschool) scored and shortly after,
Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) netted her second on the night.
To end the scoring run,
Riley Bauer (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) finished another ball off of Linley's pass.
The Northwestern Eagles finished the night with 53 shots and 30 shots on goal. Northwestern's defense allowed little to no shots or possession for the Rams. The Eagles showed huge amounts of grit through the elements of Saturday's game and travels.
Northwestern moves to 5-9 and 2-1 in the UMAC. North Central falls to 0-10 and 0-4 in the UMAC.
The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday evening as they host Northland College at 6:30 pm. Come support the Lady Eagles at Reynolds Field for another UMAC contest.
