Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Emily Goeppinger

Women's Soccer Drops Conference Opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team (3-9, 0-1 UMAC) hosted the Peak Game of the Week from Summit Orthopedics. The Eagles also opened up conference play, against the Scholastica Saints from Duluth, MN. With chilly weather and a bit of drizzly rain, the Saints defeated the Eagles 4-0 Saturday evening.

Coming in with a strong presence, the Saints scored in the first four minutes of play, slotting a ball through Northwestern's defense and past the goalie. Although the Saints went up early, Northwestern possessed the ball most of the half compiling 10 shots.

After the Saints goal, both teams went hard at it, playing physical. As Northwestern had control most of the half, Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) and Danielle Roberts (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) both had chances up top to score but were unsuccessful.

Taylor Brinkman (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) and Ellyn Boland (Marshalltown, Iowa./Marshalltown) held the defensive line as Scholastica tried to score.

Second half started quick as the Saints got out to a 2-0 lead at the forty-nine minute mark. Even though the Eagles outshot the Saints and had more chances, they were not able to finish.

Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) came away with seven shots, three on goal. Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) had three shots on goal while Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Homeschool) tabbed four. Leah Brewer (Waukesha, Wis./Lake Country Lutheran) brought in six saves on the night.

The Saints move to 6-6 and 3-0 in the UMAC. Northwestern falls to 3-9 and 0-1 in the UMAC.

The Eagles will be back on the Pitch this Wednesday against Minnesota Morris. The game is slated for 3:30 pm. For all things women's soccer visit unweagles.com.
