MANKATO, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team traveled this Tuesday to play conference opponent, Bethany Lutheran College. With frigid temperatures and slight wind, the Eagles persevered to a 3-0 win. With the win, Northwestern solidified a number two seed in the UMAC, hosting the semifinal round of playoffs on Wednesday, November 6.
The first half proved difficult for the Eagles with the cold temperatures. Northwestern had 14 shots to the Vikings 0. After the first ten minutes of the game, the Eagles picked up the pace and began to take over. The ball stayed on Bethany's half for most minutes, proving Northwestern's dominance.
The Eagles had 3 corner kick opportunities. Seventeen minutes in,
Amanda Kocurek (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) sent a ball across the net to a wide open
Emily Daubenmier (Kijabe, KE./Rift Valley Academy), who scored the first goal for the Eagles.
The half would end with a 1-0 advantage for the Eagles.
Second half, the Eagles came out ready to go with the desire to win. Junior,
Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) showed grit in finishing a put back ball by defender,
Natalie Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan County Christian) to put the Eagles up by two. Four minutes later, center defender,
Taylor Brinkman (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) fired a shot off of a free kick into the upper ninety side netting, past the keeper.
The Eagles finished with 27 shots, 13 shots on goal and 5 corners.
Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) led the Eagles with 9 shots,
Hannah Walmsley (Lino Lakes, Minn./Homeschool) had 4 shots and
Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Homeschool) finished with 3.
UNW ends up 10-10 and 7-1 in the UMAC as Bethany falls to 8-9 and 4-4 in the UMAC.
Northwestern's next game will be Wednesday November 6 at Reynolds Field, time to be determined.
