ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team came out strong Saturday afternoon against conference competitor, Crown College. With their last, home, regular season game, the seniors were recognized for all their hard work and dedication. The Eagles were dominant in the game, defeating the Storm 9-0, with the sun shining brightly.
First half started right away as the Eagles took the lead in the tenth minute with a goal by junior, midfielder,
Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool). Welch was assisted by
Danielle Roberts (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) to put Northwestern on the board. Three minutes later,
Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) scored her second goal of the day to put the Eagles up by two.
Danielle Roberts (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) scored her first of the match off of a small touch from
Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) in the twenty-ninth minute. Northwestern had a total of six corner kicks in the first half and were able to capitalize on one as
Alexis Albrecht (Fargo, N.D./Sheyenne) curved the ball in, from the corner flag, to score for the Eagles.
Before the end of the half,
Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) scored a beautiful upper-ninety goal from midfield to put the Eagles up 5-0 at half.
Northwestern's defense allowed zero shots downfield, while offensively, the Eagles took twenty-two in the first half alone.
The second half started no different as
Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) started the action for the Eagles scoring her third goal of the day off of an assist by
Hannah Walmsley (Lino Lakes, Minn./Homeschool). Senior,
Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) would score her second of the day off of another
Danielle Roberts (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) assist.
To end the game in fashion,
Danielle Roberts (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) and senior,
Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Homeschool) would both score unassisted to bring the final score to 9-0.
With a total of thirty-nine shots and twenty-two on goal, the Eagles showed their talent magnificently. Neither goalie for the Eagles had to make any saves on the day, which brags on the defensive dominance the Eagles brought to senior day.
Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) finished with 10 shots,
Danielle Roberts (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) had 6 and
Emily Daubenmier (Kijabe, KE./Rift Valley Academy) took 5.
The Eagles move to 9-10 and 6-1 in the UMAC. Crown falls to 5-10 and 1-6 in the UMAC.
Northwestern's next contest will be at Bethany Lutheran this Tuesday, to finish up regular season play. Playoffs will being the first week in November.
