Women's Soccer Hands UW-Superior First Conference Loss

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team traveled north to UW-Superior Tuesday for a big conference match-up. The Eagles handed the Yellowjackets their first loss in conference play by a score of 1-0. In winning this game, UNW clenched a 2019 UMAC tournament spot. The UMAC tournament will take place the beginning of November.

With winter-like conditions, the Eagles needed to start strong, traveling to face a tough UW-Superior team. The first half was mostly offensive for Northwestern as they took 12 shots to the Yellow Jackets 1. They were unable to get anything past the keeper as she had 8 saves in the first half alone.

Northwestern controlled the ball decently throughout the half. Senior, Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) took 8 shots which was a team high for the Eagles.

First half play ended with an even 0-0 score.

The Eagles defended the kick-off to start the second half, but were quick to win control from the Yellowjackets. Northwestern had many chances up field and shots on net that kept UW-Superior on their toes. The Lady Eagles were able to take 20 shots in the second half.

In the 64th minute, Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) had an opportunity on net that bounced off the keeper and Danielle Roberts (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) was able to finish and give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage. The rest of the game, the Eagles were eager to increase energy and intensity up field to score. Their defense played another solid game as UW-Superior had two shots all game.

Freshman, goalkeeper Ellie Fryer (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) came away with the shutout for the Eagles.

Northwestern moves to 8-10 overall and 5-1 in the UMAC, while UW-Superior falls to 6-8-2 and 5-1 in the UMAC.

Northwestern will be back in action this Saturday, October 26 when they host Crown College for a 1pm kickoff.
