NEW ULM, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team traveled to Martin Luther College this Saturday to take on the Knights of New Ulm. Continuing the conference battles for both teams, Northwestern was able to capitalize and came away with a 1-0 win.
With beautiful weather around them, both teams were in it from the start. Possession was favored towards Northwestern as they took many shots and were on Martin Luther's end for much of the half.
At the twenty-two minute mark, senior, captain,
Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Homeschool) was able to capitalize on a penalty box foul that resulted in a Northwestern penalty kick. Her shot was upper right side of the net, zinging past the goalie with intense speed. This was her fifth goal on the season.
The Eagles had 17 shots in the first half alone, while taking 8 corner kicks.
Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) and
Emily Daubenmier (Kijabe, KE./Rift Valley Academy) led the Eagles in shots, taking 7 and 5, respectively.
Taylor Brinkman (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) and
Ellyn Boland (Marshalltown, Iowa./Marshalltown) came in clutch yet again, holding a strong defensive line against a hungry Knights offense.
To end the match, the Eagles had 27 shots (12 on goal), 10 corner kicks and only allowed the Knights 6 shots. Northwestern moves to 7-10 and 4-1 in conference play. Martin Luther falls to 5-8 and 2-3 in conference.
