UNION, NJ – The University of Northwestern volleyball team wrapped up action at the North Jersey Challenge on Saturday, tacking on two more wins. The Eagles went a perfect 4-0 on the weekend without dropping a single set. UNW recorded wins over tournament host, Kean University followed by the University of Scranton.
The Eagles improve to 17-7 on the year and have won six straight. Kean falls to 20-8 on the year, while Scranton moves to 12-13 overall.
UNW 3, Kean 0. Set Scores: 25-16, 25-13, 25-17
The Eagles continued to play with well-rounded consistency in Saturday action, hitting .283 to Kean's .019 in the match.
Returning from injury,
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian) led Northwestern with 11 kills.
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) recorded 10 and
Anna Gasch (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) added 9.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) and
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) both had double-doubles in the three-set win. Sydney dished out 35 assists on top of 10 digs, while
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) tacked on 10 digs to her 10 kills.
Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) finished with 12 digs and
Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) had a team-best three blocks.
UNW 3, Scranton 0. Set Scores: 25-8, 25-21, 25-21
Northwestern set the tone early against Scranton, rolling to a quick 25-8 win. The Eagles put together several runs, including a 9-0 run propelled by four service aces from
Lucy Pelzel (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral).
Anna Gasch (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) led the way with 10 kills. Gasch was named to the North Jersey All-Tournament Team for her standout performances in UNW's four tournament wins. She put together 37 kills (3.1/set) and eight blocks in weekend play.
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian) added nine kills in the win and
Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) had eight.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) dished out 32 assists and
Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) finished with 14 digs.
Northwestern will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 23 when they take on Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opponent, UW-Superior. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at the Ericksen Center.
