ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team played under the lights for the second night in a row this week, hosting the Carroll Pioneers. The non-conference matchup was a nail bitter for most of the game, but ended in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss for the Eagles.
From the first whistle, both teams played hard and came at each other strong. Play was evenly matched from each side as Carroll tabbed 6 shots on goal and Northwestern took 3. Each keeper had 3 saves on the half along with strong defense in front of them.
The Eagles went into halftime ready to keep up the intensity second half.
Northwestern showed grit right off the bat as they controlled the ball to keep the Pioneers on their heels.
Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) and
Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) each had two shots on goal, to put the pressure on.
Carroll was able to take 13 shots in the second half alone.
With 3 minutes remaining in the game, Carroll took advantage on a breakaway and would score the lone goal of the night.
The Eagles tried to tie it up but were unsuccessful.
The Northwestern Eagles will travel to Martin Luther this coming weekend to take on the Knights in a conference match-up.
