Eagles Fall to Saints in Five Set Battle; Ending 8 Year Win Streak

DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern volleyball team hit the road to take on St. Scholastica in a Tuesday evening conference match-up. The Eagles secured sets one and two in dominant fashion, but the Saints rallied on their home court – winning the final three sets to secure their first victory over Northwestern since 2011. Final set scores came in at: 25-21, 25-14, 15-25, 22-25 and 12-15.

The Eagles fall to 9-5 on the year and 2-1 in conference play, while Scholastica improves to 9-4 overall, 1-1 in the UMAC.

Coming off two straight set match wins, it appeared to be another evening of smooth sailing for Northwestern. The Eagles got off to an 8-0 start and never trailed in set one enroute to a 25-21 win. They were even more impressive in set two – hitting .379 as a team to the Saints' -.031 to roll to a quick 25-14 win.

Scholastica changed the momentum in set three after UNW was plagued by offensive inconsistencies, giving the Saints an early 9-3 lead. The Eagles would never be able to make up the difference –falling in a quick third set.

Both teams rallied in set four as Northwestern held the lead for the first 10 points. The Eagles would pull ahead again at 18-17 and tie it up at 22-22 following two straight kills from Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian), but the Saints would win three straight points to secure the set.

In the fifth and final set, a back-and-forth battle resumed. The difference-maker was two small runs by the Saints that would ultimately give them the three point edge.

Three Eagles recorded double-digit kill totals including Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian) (15), Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) (14) and Anna Gasch (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) (10). Gasch tacked on an impressive nine blocks on the night.

Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) dished out 48 assists in the five-setter and Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) picked up 25 digs. Kalley and Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) added 17 and 15 digs, respectively.

Northwestern will be back at it on Friday, Oct. 4 when they take on St. Olaf College in Northfield. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
