Eagles Fall in Road Battle to Conference Leader

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team traveled to Yellowjacket territory to take on UW-Superior in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening. In a back-and-forth battle that featured six lead changes and even scoring through three quarters of play, the Eagles fell in a well-fought 71-61 final.
 
Superior, who had won 53 straight UMAC games prior to a Saturday loss to Bethany Lutheran, improves to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The Eagles fall to 7-8 on the year, 4-2 in the UMAC.
 
Northwestern started strong, battling the reigning conference champions to an even 27-27 heading into the half. The Eagles put forth a strong third quarter effort, taking a three-point lead following a three-pointer from Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) and jumper from Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) with six minutes remaining.
 
Northwestern trailed by four heading into fourth quarter play and continued to battle – keeping the deficit at four points until UW-Superior knocked down two straight, three-pointers with four minutes remaining. The Yellowjackets rode out the 10-point lead to secure a home court victory.
 
Four Eagles recorded double-digit scoring on the night led by Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) with 14 points. Lund connected on four shots from beyond the arc and dished out three assists.
 
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) tacked on 13 points apiece, while Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) added 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds.
 
Northwestern lost the rebounding battle, 44-28 and gave up 24 second chance points.
 
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 12 when they welcome Martin Luther to the Ericksen Center. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. against the Knights who are 1-13 on the season, 1-5 (UMAC).
