CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Northwestern (0-2) traveled to the west coast to take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (1-1) for a 1 p.m. (PT) kickoff at Zinda Field Saturday in 90 degree California heat. The Eagles were held to 163 yards and a late first-half field goal to fall 14-3 in their second game this season.
After a scoreless first quarter, Stags quarterback Brenden Brown connected with Zach Heffernan for a nine-yard touchdown pass to take the lead with :52 remaining in the second. The Eagles answered back, orchestrating a seven-play, 33-yard drive in :45 resulting in a
Josiah Donat (Elk River, Minn./Washtenaw Christian Academy) 46-yd field goal. At the half, Northwestern trailed 7-3.
The second half showcased just one more scoring play as Claremont took a 14-3 lead midway through the third quarter.
Taylor Lindahl (Watertown, S.D./Watertown) finished the contest 9-of-27 for 78 yards with two interceptions.
Evan Pruitt (Temecula, Calif./Rancho Christian High School) hauled in three receptions that covered a team-high 33 yards, while
Caleb Sieben (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) grabbed three Lindahl passes for 22 yards.
Payton Bowdry (Minneapolis, Minn./South) did a majority of the damage on the ground for the Eagles, rushing 11 times for 33 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, UNW had a pair of players log double-digit tackle totals,
Noah Nightingale (Fennville, Mich./Fennville) and
Chase Marlenee (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) who posted 10 stops apiece. Sophomore
Dylan Kahlstorf (Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park) posted a sack for a loss of 10 yards.
