EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team split its matches on Saturday in Eau Claire, falling to UW- Eau Claire and then defeating St. Norbert. The results move the Eagles to 8-9 on the season.
In the first match of the day versus UWEC, the Eagles fell by a score of 9-0. To begin the match on the doubles side, the Eagles were competitive in a few of the matches in taking at least two games in all matches. The second doubles team of
Emily Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and
Shawna Spears (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) played especially well, taking six games in the defeat.
Northwestern had a tough go of it in singles action, but competed well in a few of the matches. At the second position
Nikki Paskewitz (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley) took seven games in defeat and at the fourth spot Spears took a set in her match (6-3, 0-6, 3-10).
In the final contest of the day versus St. Norbert, UNW got the win by a score of 6-3. Starting in doubles play, the Eagles took two of the three matches played. The first team of
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) and Paskewitz picked up a victory 8-4, while the second team of Knight and Spears won 8-6.
The Eagles played solid tennis on the singles side, winning four of the six matches played. At the fifth position
Gracie LeBrun (Pine City, Minn./Pine City) picked up a hard fought win (7-5, 6-4) and Knight came from behind to win at the third position (4-6, 6-4, 10-7).
