Softball Bounces Back in Game Two to Earn Split in Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern softball team (16-12, 4-3) picked up a split Thursday at the College of St. Scholastica (11-10, 5-1). UNW fell short, 5-3, in the opener before bouncing back with a 7-4 win in game two.

Game One
CSS jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first, but the Eagles responded with a two-run second to even the score before the Saints tacked on one in the bottom of the second and two more in the third en route to the 5-3 win. UNW's third run came in the sixth via Abbie Nelson (Holdrege, Neb./Holdrege)'s second run-scoring knock of the game.

Nelson and Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn/Kingsland) finished with a pair of hits apiece.

Lexi Kopacek (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) was charged with the loss in the circle, as the freshman lefty went the distance, allowing five runs on 10 hits.

Game Two
Thanks to a Mindy Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) two-run triple in the top of the sixth, the Eagles scored three runs in the frame and never looked back, securing the 7-4 win.

???????Moriah Maunu (Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake) (2-1) hurled 4.2 innings to pick-up the win, as she didn't allow an earned run while scattering seven hits. Abbie Nelson (Holdrege, Neb./Holdrege) grabbed the save, as she didn't allow a run in 2.1 innings of work.

Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn/Kingsland) and Mindy Forcer both tallied three hits, while Abbie Nelson (Holdrege, Neb./Holdrege) had a pair of base knocks. Schmidt also scored three runs.

The Eagles will return to Reynolds Field for three-straight UMAC series. The first of those will be Saturday with Martin Luther at 1 p.m. Fans can find more information at unweagles.com and by following @unwsoftball on Twitter.
