DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern softball team (16-12, 4-3) picked up a split Thursday at the College of St. Scholastica (11-10, 5-1). UNW fell short, 5-3, in the opener before bouncing back with a 7-4 win in game two.
Game One
CSS jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first, but the Eagles responded with a two-run second to even the score before the Saints tacked on one in the bottom of the second and two more in the third en route to the 5-3 win. UNW's third run came in the sixth via
Abbie Nelson (Holdrege, Neb./Holdrege)'s second run-scoring knock of the game.
Nelson and
Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn/Kingsland) finished with a pair of hits apiece.
Lexi Kopacek (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) was charged with the loss in the circle, as the freshman lefty went the distance, allowing five runs on 10 hits.
Game Two
Thanks to a
Mindy Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) two-run triple in the top of the sixth, the Eagles scored three runs in the frame and never looked back, securing the 7-4 win.

Moriah Maunu (Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake) (2-1) hurled 4.2 innings to pick-up the win, as she didn't allow an earned run while scattering seven hits.
Abbie Nelson (Holdrege, Neb./Holdrege) grabbed the save, as she didn't allow a run in 2.1 innings of work.
Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn/Kingsland) and Mindy Forcer both tallied three hits, while
Abbie Nelson (Holdrege, Neb./Holdrege) had a pair of base knocks. Schmidt also scored three runs.
