Softball Sweeps MLC; Moves to 7-3 in UMAC

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern softball team moved to 7-3 in league play with a sweep of Martin Luther College (3-13, 2-6) on a picture-perfect Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Field. The Eagles – who won by scores of 4-0 and 5-3 – improve to 18-12 overall on the year.

Game One
Lexi Kopacek (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (9-6) spun a three-hit gem, as the freshman didn't allow a run and struck out three to notch the victory.

Mindy Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins)'s two-run double in the top of the fifth ignited the UNW offense. She finished with two hits and two RBI. Kayla Hannasch (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North ) laid down a bunt in a squeeze situation in the top of the sixth to plate UNW's fourth run.

Game Two
The Eagles used a three-run sixth inning to extend their lead to 5-0 before the Knights made things interesting with a three-run frame of their own to make the score 5-3. Moriah Maunu (Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake) then came in to pitch the seventh and put MLC down in order to pick up the save.

UNW scored all three of its runs in the sixth with two outs as Kayla Madison (North Branch, Minn./Forest Lake ) got things rolling with her two-run double before Ellie Ronning (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area ) followed with an RBI single to score Madison. Madison also laced a run-scoring two-bagger in the top of the first. She finished with three hits and three RBI, while Maunu added two hits.

Abbie Nelson (Holdrege, Neb./Holdrege) (7-5) earned the win in the circle, hurling the first six innings. She didn't allow an earned run while scattering five hits and striking out a pair.

The Eagles will continue their homestand Monday with a doubleheader against Crown. First pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m. Fans can find more information at unweagles.com and by following @unwsoftball on Twitter.
