WAUKESHA, WIS. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team (3-9) was defeated by Carroll University (12-0) on Friday afternoon at Schneider Stadium by a final score of 16-3 in Wisconsin.
The home Pioneers quickly jumped ahead and shut out the Eagles in the first frame, heading into the halftime break with a 9-0 lead. UNW fought back in the second period, scoring a goal by Junior Hannah Shands (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi) before Carroll answered with five additional goals. Northwestern then tacked on two more goals late in the game, but it proved to be too little as Carroll secured the 16-3 afternoon victory.
Shands led the Eagles offense, scoring two goals. She also added four ground balls, two caused turnovers, and three draw controls to her stat line, respectively. Senior Jodi Bertrand (Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls) also chipped in, scoring the other goal for UNW.
On the defensive side, goalkeeper Sydney Werlein (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) collected nine saves.
As a team, Northwestern scored three goals on six shots, scooped up 19 ground balls, and noted nine caused turnovers.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, April 25, when they take on Hamline University. First draw is slated for 7 p.m. in Minneapolis. For more information, fans can visit www.unweagles.com and follow @unwwlax on Twitter.
