ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team came up short in its season finale contest against Hamline University [12-4 overall] Wednesday evening in St. Paul. The Eagles dropped the match by a final score of 22-6 to the home Pipers. With the deficit, UNW finishes the 2018 season with a 3-10 record.
HU started the evening off hot, scoring 15 goals in the first frame to take a dominant 15-2 lead by the halftime break. Hamline's strong offensive attack carried over into the second period, as the home Pipers netted seven more goals to UNW's four to secure a 22-6 win over the visiting Eagles.
Sophomore
Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) led the offensive front for Northwestern, scoring three goals on the night's competition. Three other Eagles found the back of the net on the evening game with Junior
Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi), Junior
Hannah Shands (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi), and Sophomore
Annie Ellis (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) all tallying a goal apiece for UNW. Broberg also won five draw controls, respectively.
On the defensive end, Freshman
Danielle Heiderscheid (Cambridge, Minn. /Homeschool) and
Logan Retzlaff (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) each noted impressive performances. Heiderscheid picked up a team-high four ground balls and recorded one caused turnovers, while Retzlaff scooped three grounders and had two caused turnovers.
As a team, the Eagles fired off nine shots (8 SOG), gathered 13 ground balls, and went 9-for-17 on clears.
