Eagles Soar To Victory Over Wartburg On Senior Night

ST. PAUL, MINN. –  The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team defeated Wartburg College [5-6 overall] Tuesday evening in its home finale, soaring to a 12-10 victory over the visiting Knights. With the win, UNW improves to 3-8 on the season.

On the night's competition, the squad also celebrated its two outstanding seniors, Jodi Bertrand (Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls) and Kesenya Havlicek (New Prague, Minn./New Prague), thanking them for their contributions both on and off the lacrosse field.

After netting three goals by the 25:00 mark thanks to Hannah Shands (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi) and Coral Hulcher (Oakton, Va./Oakton), Wartburg rallying from behind to make it a 3-3 contest by the 13-minute mark. The back-and-forth battle continued throughout the remainder of the first half, with the scoreboard balanced 5-5 at the intermission break.  

Taking on the second period, UNW battled in their best efforts as they tacked on seven more goals on the match, while WC added five, to soar to a 12-10 senior night victory on home turf.

Shands led the offensive front for Northwestern, netting six goals on the evening contest, while teammate Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) scored three and Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) two. Shands also finished the contest with an impressive 10 grounders and five draw controls, while Broberg and Sherry each scooped up two ground balls.  

As a collective group, the Eagles totaled 28 shots (23 SOG), 22 ground balls, and went 17-for-26 on clears.

The purple and gold will travel to Waukesha, Wis. on Friday, April 13, for a match against Carroll University. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. For more information, fans should visit www.unweagles.com.
