ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team came up short against the University of Dubuque (2-2 overall) Saturday afternoon on home turf, falling to the visiting Spartans by a final score of 16-7. With the loss, the Eagles drop to 2-5 on the season.
After UD jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, UNW's
Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) buried two goals for the Eagles to cut the visiting Spartans lead, 3-2. As the first half of play continued, Dubuque tacked on seven more goals to Northwestern's two to take a 10-4 advantage into the intermission break.
Playing through a hard-fought second half, UNW netted three more goals on the game, but it wasn't enough as UD sank six to secure a 16-7 victory over the home Eagles.
Sherry led the pack with three goals on the afternoon contest, while also finishing with one assist and one ground ball. Junior
Hannah Shands (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi) also had a strong showing on the game as she scored two goals for the Eagles and scooped a game-high 11 grounders, while teammates
Jodi Bertrand (Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls) and
Coral Hulcher (Oakton, Va./Oakton) netted a goal apiece.
As a collective group, Northwestern recorded a grand total of 18 shots [15 SOG], scooped 27 ground balls, and went 21-35 on clears.
