MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team was defeated by Augsburg University [3-3] by a final score of 17-4 in its mid-week battle Wednesday night in Minneapolis. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 2-4 on the season.
The Auggies started out hot, scoring three goals before UNW answered with a goal of their own by Sophomore
Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) at the 24:37 mark. The rally was quickly extinguished by Augsburg as they went on to net seven more goals to Northwestern's one to take a 10-2 lead at the halftime break.
In the second half, AU continued their strong offensive force, outscoring UNW 7-2 to secure the evening victory by a final score of 17-4.
Sherry led the way for UNW's offense, scoring two goals on the night. She also ended with an assist and two draw controls, respectively. Junior
Hannah Shands (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi) and Sophomore
Annie Ellis (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) also had a strong showing as they each added a lone goal to their stat lines. Shands also finished the game with five ground balls, four caused turnover, and three draw controls.
On the defensive side, Goalkeeper
Sydney Werlein (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) finished the competition with an impressive 13 saves for the purple and gold.
As a team, the Eagles scored four goals off 12 shots, gathered 27 ground balls, and totaled 19 caused turnovers.
