ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team secured a 62-53 victory over Martin Luther College [6-19, 4-12 UMAC] its regular season finale Saturday afternoon inside the Ericksen Center. With the win, UNW finishes the regular season 13-12 overall and 9-7 in league play. The afternoon contest was also deemed senior day, as the team celebrated its four outstanding upperclassman –
Alex Peterson (St. Paul, Minn. /Como Park),
Andrea Zimpel (Isle, Minn./Isle),
Jessica Brown (Watford City, N.D./Watford City), and
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West).
After leading 16-7 at the close of the first quarter, the Eagles maintained their composure all through the second period to take a well-earned 27-25 advantage into the intermission break.
Throughout the third frame, Martin Luther made quite the impression as they took Northwestern to two lead changes to trail by three, 45-42. Battling through the fourth, the Eagles managed to come out on top, securing the afternoon win 62-53 over the visiting Knights.
Alex Peterson (St. Paul, Minn. /Como Park) [18 pts] and
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) [17 pts] couldn't have asked for a better way to end the regular season, as they each tallied double digits on the game. Peterson also finished with eight rebounds and three assists, while Tumbleson noted four boards, two assists, and one block. Junior
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) also had a strong showing, as she netted nine points, respectively.
On the contest, UNW shot 40.6 percent from the field, while MLC finished by hitting nearly 30 percent from the floor.
The Eagles locked down the No. 4 seed heading into next week's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference [UMAC] post-season tournament.
