ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team welcomed UW-Stout to the Ericksen Center for Friday night action. In an exhilarating, fast-paced game – the Eagles came out on top, defeating the Blue Devils 94-82.
With the win, Northwestern improves to 3-3 overall and grabs their first win over the Blue Devils since the 2015-16 season. UW-Stout falls to 3-3 on the year and are 0-2 against UMAC teams (after also falling to Bethany Lutheran in a tight match-up).
Northwestern was first to score and never lost the lead. The Eagles went up by as much as 22 points to start the second half after a made three-pointer by
Brady Bellefeuille (Frazee, Minn./Frazee).
The Blue Devils made a notable comeback, cutting the lead to as little as two-points (69-67), propelled by strong shooting from beyond the arc. UW-Stout's John Keefe made six of seven shots from three-point range in the final 20 minutes.
Northwestern didn't back down. Propelled by multiple second-chance points (including seven offensive boards by
Tanner Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area)), the Eagles regained control.
Youngberg led the way with 21 points and a career-best 15 rebounds. He dished out a team-best five assists and grabbed three steals.
Caleb Hageman (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) also finished with 21 points on the night, shooting 10 for 19 from the field.
Brady Bellefeuille (Frazee, Minn./Frazee) and
Brady Peterson (Princeton, Minn./Homeschool) added 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Anderson Bazile Jr. (Houston, Tex./San Antonio Reagan) finished with 10.
Northwestern will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 5 when they welcome Bethany Lutheran to the Ericksen Center for the UMAC conference opener. Tipoff is slated for 7:15 p.m., following the women's action.
