Eagles Drop 14-7 Contest at Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern football team (2-4 overall, 2-2 UMAC) traveled North to take on St. Scholastica in Saturday night action at Public Schools Stadium. While the Eagles made a late game comeback, the Saints held the ball for the final 7:33 to defeat Northwestern, 14-7. Scholastica improved to 3-2 overall, 3-1 in conference play.

The Saints were first to score, connecting on a 27-yard pass play to take a 7-0 lead with four minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Eagles looked to cut the deficit in the second quarter, but missed a 22-yard field goal attempt to remain scoreless.

Scholastica picked up their second and final touchdown in the third quarter on a six-play drive.

After getting stopped inside the Saints 25-yard line, the Eagles got on the board following an Evan Pruitt (Temecula, Calif./Rancho Christian High School) one-yard touchdown catch from Taylor Lindahl (Watertown, S.D./Watertown). Pruitt's fourth touchdown this season was followed by a Josiah Donat (Elk River, Minn./Washtenaw Christian Academy) made PAT, to draw Northwestern within seven (14-7).

Despite over seven minutes remaining, the Eagles would not regain possession.

Pruitt scored the lone touchdown for Northwestern and hauled in eight receptions that covered a team-high 66 yards. Gavin Welch (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) grabbed three passes for 23 yards. Lindahl went 22 of 37 for 142 yards passing on the day.

Payton Bowdry (Minneapolis, Minn./South) led the running efforts for the Eagles, picking up 97 yards on 18 rushing attempts. Nate VanBeusekom (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) finished with a gain of 45 yards on 11 rushes.

On the defensive end, Noah Nightingale (Fennville, Mich./Fennville) and Ben Maki (Elk River, Minn./Spectrum) each came up with 5 tackles. Seth Johnson (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian) added two sacks. Josiah Nohr (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) and John Rumpf (Denver, Colo./Bishop Machebeuf) had one sack apiece. Ryan Van Maanen (Oshkosh, Wis./Valley Christian) picked off the Eagles lone interception on the day.

Northwestern will continue UMAC play next week when they host Minnesota Morris at Reynolds Field for the 2018 Football Frenzy. Kickoff is slated for 6 PM on Saturday, October 13.
